A friends reply on my question about his opinion of the importance of oil temperature for air-cooled VW engines he said: “I don´t want to know the oil temperature of my engine at all, it just would worry me”.
With this comment he “took the biscuit”, oil temperature is most essential and makes the difference between do or die of Your little VW engine.
So, many measurement manufacturers started offering temperature gauges for the VW right from the beginning of the 1950s, which from October 1952 on had a dial design according to the VWs glass-needle speedometer.
We, in collaboration with a small measurement company here in Germany, produce temperature gauges in the style of these oldspeed measuring instruments.
With exception of the optional illumination the instruments are all non-electric. The temperature, as with the 1950s gauges, is detected by dilatation of liquid in the dipstick-sensor, conducted by a capillary to a precision pressure metering instrument.
The capillary is a little fragile, it is protected by a copper mesh-hose and may not be cut off. The dipstick-sensor and line have to carefully be guided from the gauge to the dipstick-inlet of the engine. To achieve this, at least one hole has to be drilled into the chassis underneath the rear seats to get the line out of the passenger cabin.
We offer the temperature gauges with two different dial designs and two different diameters, that are:
- White dial with a black ladder-style scale, as with the period-correct gauges for VWs before 10/1952
- Anthracite dial with period-style design of the glass-needle speedometer for VWs past 10/1952
You can get both designs with either standard 52mm diameter or larger 60mm diameter.
Appropriate to the gauges we offer gauge holders of different designs to fix the measuring instruments to the steering column, which was the favorite method during the Split- and Oval-VW era.
Too we are making a triple gauge holder to fit instead of the radio-speaker grille in the style of the Moto Meter holder for Zwitter- and Oval-VWs.
